This will, of course, involve assistance from U.K.
funds and I suggest that we should make a joint
approach to the Chancellor of the Exchequer with a
view to the acceptance by the Government of this
recommendation and the financial assistance from
U.K. funds which it involves. Some consideration
has been given to the financial implications of the
Committee's proposal in my Department and certain
proposals have been put to the Governor of Hong Kong
for his views. We hope to have his views and to be
in a position to make definite proposals within the
next few days. Our present proposals, to which I hope
the Governor will agree, would involve contributions
15 from U.K. funds of 600,000 towards the capital
expenditure and £30,000 per annum towards the
recurrent expenditure.
